MOTIVATIONS FOR THE AWARDS

Short film section

THE FILM RANKED SECOND: Massimo, by Ciro D'Emilio, Italy, 2011

Synopsis. Massimo, a veteran of a Middle East mission, relives the trauma of the conflict.

Motivation

The featured film depicts the memories of Massimo, a soldier part of a peace mission in the Middle East. The film evokes the tragedy of landmines scattered across the world because of the armed conflicts and provides an opportunity to discuss the topic of disarmament, a topic that should be discussed in all appropriate forums.

THE FILM RANKED FIRST: Fluffy Pink Bunnies, by Ava Lanche, Egypt and Tuvalu, 2012

Synopsis. This is not a short film about fluffy pink bunnies.

Motivation

The short film by director Ava Lanche is inspired by a national U.S. law, the National Defence Authorization Act, which allows the military forces to arrest anyone without trial, based only on suspicion. The shorts presents an original and personal parody of the new regulations: in a home there is no toilet paper left, and newspapers are used instead; fortunately they are not missing because of all the news related to wars and conflicts taking place around the world.

Feature film section

THE FILM RANKED SECOND: Il sole tramonta a mezzanotte by Christian Canderan, Italy, 2009

Synopsis. July 13, 1944. A fifteen years old boy, Gianni Missana was hanged in his village, Valeriano. Shortly before, in Spilimbergo, nineteen years old Primo Zanetti had the same fate.

Motivation

The feature film undertakes a careful reconstruction of a historical fact, which happened in Friuli. In 1944, Gianni Missana, a 15 years old boy and Primo Zanetti, 19 years old are hanged by the SS. The film, which contains also very moving moments, gives us an opportunity to reflect on our history that is made up of individual stories and deep personal suffering.

THE FILM RANKED FIRST: Life in Italy Is OK by Gianfranco Marino, Italy, 2011

Synopsis. “Life in Italy is OK” the person declaring it is Gloria, a Nigerian patient at the Emergency clinic in Palermo. The documentary shows the tragic condition of the immigrants in Italy, whose right to treatment is often denied.

Motivation

The documentary presents several images showing medical care given to migrants in Sicily by Emergency, which was initially established to provide emergency surgery in countries at war and has now extended its humanitarian mission by promoting a culture of peace and human rights .

The director, using the simple and specific elements of the traditional reportage, is able to convey to the viewer the intimate moments of pain, and a rich set of information about the right to health care to which everyone is entitled regardless of social status and ethnicity.

First Absolute Award of the Festival “A Film for Peace”, 2012 edition

After careful analysis of the two films ranking first, the Technical Jury assigned ex-aequo the silver plate to the following films: “Fluffy Pink Bunnies” by Ava Lanche and “Life Is OK in Italy” by Gianfranco Marino.

Awarding the prize ex-aequo to the two films was necessary because of the difficulty of comparing two works of different types - Fluffy Pink Bunnies (scripted short film), and Life in Italy Is OK (feature documentary) - both deserving the highest recognition for promoting issues of peace, human rights and justice, promotion which fits perfectly the core objectives of the Film Festival “A Film for Peace”.
